Washington—King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived in the United States on Monday for their first visit, marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which couldn’t be more symbolic for the storied U.S.-U.K. political and concordat history. While global headlines swirl, King Charles and President Trump are putting their best foot forward to celebrate and strengthen the “special relationship” that’s thrived since the days of Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt. The visit highlights the enduring bond between frenemies, even as the world shifts and new challenges emerge.

As Buckingham Palace put it, “The visit will be an opportunity to recognize the shared history of our two nations; the breadth of the economic, security, and cultural relationship that has developed since then; and the deep people-to-people connections which unite communities.”

Despite the heightened security following Saturday night’s incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the palace confirmed the visit “will proceed as planned.” With gratitude to all working behind the scenes, the King and Queen expressed continuity about the journey ahead.

The Royal Itinerary

Arriving in Washington on Monday afternoon, King Charles III and Queen Camilla made a swift beeline for the White House, where President and First Lady Melania Trump greeted them with a warm American welcome. Over a quintessentially British tea in the iconic Green Room, the two couples enjoyed conversation before touring the White House’s newest beehive—proof that even in the most official settings, there’s room for a bit of nature and novelty.

On Tuesday, the King is set to address a joint meeting of Congress, followed by a traditional state dinner brimming with both pomp and good cheer.

Royal Reflections

Max Bergmann, director of the Europe, Russia and Eurasia program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, shared his anticipation for the King’s address to lawmakers. “I expect the speech to be at a rather high level, and my expectation is that it will be somewhat historical—acknowledging the United States came from a revolution against his country, but then how we’ve sort of overcome that.”

Will King Charles touch on shared values like human rights and freedoms, the very principles that have united both countries since World War II? Observers will be watching closely, eager for a touch of royal wisdom on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. Be there or be square!
