New Jersey -- In a notable divergence of viewpoints, the candidates for governor of New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill and Jack Ciattarelli, publicly addressed President Donald Trump's recent military action against Iran's nuclear ambitions. The opinions were outlined in a piece by David Wildstein of the NJ Globe, dated 22 June 2025.

Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli expressed his support for Trump's decision to launch targeted strikes on Iran's nuclear enrichment capability, asserting the negative implications of a nuclear-armed Iran. "President Trump's decision to destroy Iran's nuclear program was the right move. A nuclear Iran would be a grave threat to Israel and could further destabilize the Middle East," declared Ciattarelli, who has a son currently serving as a U.S. Marine overseas. He added, "God bless our American military personnel for their skill and courage in carrying out this mission."
Conversely, Democrat Mikie Sherrill criticized the lack of congressional authorization for the strikes, advocating for a diplomatic strategy to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot and four-term congresswoman stated, "I am deeply concerned by President Trump's decision to order these strikes tonight without first seeking legal authorization from Congress, as required by the Constitution." She emphasized the importance of congressional oversight in such critical military actions, arguing that lawmakers should assess the potential risks to service members and the broader objectives of U.S. foreign policy.
Sherrill acknowledged the threats posed by Iran, saying, "Iran's pursuit of a nuclear weapon and its support for terrorism across the region poses a grave threat to the United States, our ally Israel, and our partners throughout the Middle East." She called for all parties to return to negotiations to resolve the crisis peacefully. "This is especially important given the poor decision-making that led to twenty years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan without advancing the goals of the United States and our allies," she added.
As political analysts consider the ramifications of the strikes, it remains unclear how these developments will influence the upcoming New Jersey governor's race. Prominent Democratic leaders, including Charles Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, have warned that the military actions could ignite a "potentially disastrous war in the Middle East."
On the other hand, Democratic Representative Josh Gottheimer supported the military operations, emphasizing the importance of the strikes for U.S. security. "The United States took critical and decisive action to protect America and democracy at home and around the world — stopping Iran's nuclear program in its tracks," he stated. "This is not a Democratic or Republican issue — dealing with the Iranian threat is central to America's national security. The world is safer because of the actions of our brave service members."
The debate over military action and diplomatic strategy continues to unfold as New Jersey's gubernatorial candidates prepare for the elections.
