Before educational opportunity became a national conversation, before early childhood education was widely recognized, and before countless Black children found their voices through organized educational programs, Salem Baptist Church in Long Branch was already answering the call. The year was 1968. America was in the midst of profound social change. The Civil Rights Movement had awakened a nation; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. challenged America to fulfill its promise of equality; and organizations such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee inspired communities to invest in the future of their children. Under Reverend Calhoun’s leadership, the church established one of the earliest Head Start programs to serve the children and families of Long Branch and surrounding communities. It was more than a classroom—it was a ministry of hope, where young minds were nurtured, families were encouraged, and children were taught they possessed limitless potential because they were created in the image of God. Among those first Head Start students were my twin sister Karla and me. Although we were too young to understand the historical significance of what surrounded us, we were blessed to experience the love, discipline, encouragement, and Christian values that became the foundation of our educational journey. Looking back today, I realize we were witnessing history. We were beneficiaries of a ministry that believed every child deserved a chance to succeed.
The influence of Reverend Joseph Calhoun extended far beyond the pulpit. He faithfully served Salem Baptist Church, demonstrating a lifetime commitment to the Kingdom of God and to the people he was called to serve. His legacy continues through his family, including a son who serves as an African Methodist Episcopal Zion minister in Mount Holly, New Jersey, carrying forward the spirit of ministry instilled by his father.
For the Black community of Long Branch, Salem Baptist Church has long represented more than a house of worship. It has been a cornerstone of faith, education, civic responsibility, and community empowerment. Generations have entered its doors seeking spiritual guidance and have emerged strengthened, encouraged, and prepared to serve others.
As Editor and Publisher of Echo News TV LLC, I believe preserving this history is both my professional responsibility and my personal calling. Too many remarkable stories of Black churches and their faithful leaders remain untold, even as those who lived them are still able to bear witness. Their memories deserve preservation; their sacrifices deserve recognition; and their contributions deserve a permanent place in the historical record.
This work is also deeply personal. I am the granddaughter of the late Reverend William Brittingham of Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, whose ministry and leadership were respected throughout Monmouth County. His example instilled within me a lifelong appreciation for the churches, pastors, and faithful servants whose quiet dedication transformed communities long before history books took notice.
It is with profound respect that I ask the Salem Baptist Church family and the greater Long Branch community to assist in preserving this important history. I respectfully welcome church anniversary books, commemorative publications, historical photographs of Reverend Joseph Calhoun and Sister Vera Calhoun, archival newspaper articles, newsletters, records concerning the Head Start program and other outreach ministries, and personal recollections from those who knew Reverend Calhoun or participated in the life of the church. I would also be honored to interview former Head Start students, staff, volunteers, church leaders, and longtime members whose memories will help ensure that this legacy is documented with historical accuracy, dignity, and reverence. A Human-Interest Perspective: The Vital Legacy and Ongoing Challenge of Head Start
The story of Salem Baptist Church and Reverend Calhoun’s pioneering Head Start program is inseparable from the broader struggle for educational equity in New Jersey. From 2020 through 2026, Head Start programs across the state faced unprecedented threats, including proposed federal funding cuts, administrative restructuring, and policy rollbacks. In early 2025, the Trump administration’s proposal to eliminate Head Start entirely sparked public outrage and eventual reversal, yet further attempts to strip 80% of federal rules from the program risked doubling or tripling teacher-to-child ratios, increasing class sizes, and drastically reducing instruction time. The New Jersey Head Start Association warned that these changes could impact thousands of children in independent classrooms, with the closure of regional federal offices compounding the uncertainty.
Amid these turbulent times, the historical significance of Salem Baptist Church’s role is further magnified. As the first institution to bring Head Start to Long Branch, the church provided not only educational services but also hope and stability for families whose access to early childhood education was otherwise at risk. The church’s steadfast commitment, even as Head Start programs came under attack, underscores both the vulnerability and the resilience of community-based initiatives. Reverend Calhoun’s more than sixty years of ministry stand as a testament to the enduring importance of these programs and the leaders who champion them.
As we honor the memory of Reverend Joseph Calhoun, we recognize that his legacy is not only preserved in the past—it is urgently relevant to the present. The ongoing challenges faced by Head Start in New Jersey remind us that the fight for opportunity and justice continues. May we draw inspiration from Reverend Calhoun’s life and from the historic work of Salem Baptist Church to renew our commitment to children, families, and the promise of education for all.
