Social Justice: Politics & Racism in New Jersey

Rising Voices: New Jersey's Challenge to Political Racism

Monmouth County NJ - In recent months, the discourse surrounding racism in New Jersey has reached a fever pitch, particularly with the rise of extreme racist ideologies among political candidates. As the state prepares for the upcoming elections, it is crucial to recognize that voting for individuals who espouse such dangerous beliefs is simply unacceptable. Understanding the broader implications of racism is not only vital but a public health necessity.

Racism: A Learned Behavior, Not a Mental Illness?

Unlike many health conditions that are classified within the DSM-5, racism is not categorized as a mental illness. This distinction is critical in order to view racism through a practical lens, focusing on its roots in societal issues rather than as an individual psychological disorder. Racism is inherently a learned behavior, deeply rooted in systemic inequality, and perpetuated by societal structures that reinforce such attitudes. The DSM-5's exclusion of racism from mental health classifications sends a troubling message that can underplay the severity of how racism shapes individuals' lives and health, especially in marginalized communities.

Health Disparities Amplified by Racism

The health impacts of systemic racism are stark and alarming, as highlighted by data from Tulane University. For instance, Black women in the United States experience pregnancy-related deaths at more than three times the rate of their white counterparts. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected Black Americans, who face higher rates of infection, hospitalization, and death relative to white individuals. Furthermore, Black men are roughly 2.5 times more likely to be killed by police than white men, a statistic that underscores the pervasive violence within communities of color. These disparities extend beyond immediate health crises; chronic health issues, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, have been shown to have a higher prevalence among Black Americans, further illustrating the health inequities exacerbated by systemic racism.

The Mental and Physical Toll of Racism

Racism inflicts a profound toll on the mental and physical health of those adversely affected. Marginalized long-term citizens, made up by single-parent households with children primarily frequently face elevated stress levels, often leading to feelings of powerlessness that significantly correlate with mental health issues. Early exposure to racism can also result in toxic stress for children, leading to lasting impacts on their overall health and well-being. Recognizing racism as a public health issue is imperative. The American Academy of Pediatrics has published literature detailing the long-term effects of racism on both mental and physical health, urging greater community awareness and policy advocacy to address these challenges.

Political Disorders and Racist Policies

As the intersection of racism and political behavior comes under scrutiny, it is essential to examine how certain personality disorders may correlate with extreme political ideologies. Politicians exhibiting Cluster B personality traits may perpetuate racist policies that further endanger marginalized communities. This concern is particularly pertinent in light of recent political figures whose actions and beliefs align with alarming, racially charged ideologies. The "No Kings Movement," which gained traction nationwide, underscores the need for citizens to rise up against political figures who perpetuate hate. Recent protests in New Jersey saw thousands stand against the administration of President Donald Trump, with slogans calling for democracy over authoritarianism. As reported by the New Jersey Monitor, participants wore quirky costumes to disprove claims of violence, while their messages resonated with calls for justice and equality. Per the British Broadcasting Corporation article written by Grace Eliza Goodwin and Caitlin Wilson report titled: Millions turned out for anti-Trump 'No Kings' protests across US, shared that "Huge crowds took part in "No Kings" protests against President Donald Trump's policies in cities across the US on Saturday, including New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles. Thousands packed New York City's iconic Times Square and streets all around, with people holding signs with slogans like "Democracy not Monarchy" and "The Constitution is not optional." https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c93xgyp1zv4o

Ahead of the demonstrations, Trump allies accused the protesters of being linked with the far-left Antifa movement, and condemned what they called "the hate America rally".

Several US states had mobilised the National Guard. But organisers said the events, which drew nearly seven million people, were peaceful." Since his return to the White House in January, Trump has broadened presidential authority, using executive orders to dismantle parts of the federal government and deploy National Guard troops to US cities, despite state governors' objections. Trump has also urged the administration's top law enforcement officials to prosecute those he views as adversaries.

The president argues that his actions are essential for rebuilding a nation in crisis and dismisses claims that he is acting like a dictator or fascist as exaggerated despite his Cluster B behavior profile. However, critics caution that most of Trump's administration actions are unconstitutional and pose a threat to American democracy.

A Call to Action for New Jersey

Racism must be viewed not just as a social issue but as a pressing public health crisis that supports treasonous behavior per long-term extreme White racist and their allies. As Black voters in New Jersey mobilize alongside the No Kings Movement, there is a pressing need to advocate for policies that directly address the harm caused by systemic racism. These efforts are critical for both community engagement and raising awareness surrounding the health impacts of racism plus the unlawful behavior of Republican Donald Trump and his organized crime and Nazi allies.
