It is with deep sorrow that we remember Mildred Crump, a remarkable public servant whose legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of those she touched. At the age of 86, she leaves behind a profound impact as the first Black woman on the Newark City Council. Her journey began in 1986, and her unwavering commitment to her community was evident throughout her service from 1994 to 1998 and again from 2006 to 2021. Her son, Lawrence Crump, now carries the mantle of council president, a testament to her enduring influence.

In a heartfelt tribute shared on Instagram, Lawrence emphasized her selfless dedication, often placing the needs of others above her own, even at the cost of her health. Mildred's story is one of resilience and trailblazing spirit; she was not only Newark's first Black braille teacher in 1965 but also a beacon of hope and inspiration for many. Born in Detroit, her journey led her to Newark, where she made a lasting difference in the lives of countless individuals. As we honor her memory, we reflect on her extraordinary contributions and the love she poured into her community.

Brace Yourself, New Jersey:

A Canadian Storm Brings Wild Weather Mix!

Hold onto your wigs, New Jersey! A Canadian storm is rolling in, and it’s bringing a mix of snow, rain, and winds so strong they might just blow your car off the road—if you’re lucky enough to find it in the snow! The National Weather Service is predicting that from Wednesday night through Thursday night, we’ll see a delightful cocktail of weather that could make even the hardiest snowman reconsider his life choices. What to Expect:

  • Rain and Snow Showers: Because why not mix your precipitation? It’s like Mother Nature is trying to make a weather smoothie!

  • Strong Winds: Hold onto your hats—or better yet, your entire wardrobe. Those winds might just turn you into a human kite!

  • Below-Normal Temperatures: Perfect weather for hibernating or binge-watching your favorite shows under a mountain of blankets.

Most of New Jersey will see some snowfall—except for the coastal areas and the northeastern corner, which will be treated to rain instead. It’s like a weather lottery, and the coast just drew the short straw! Snow accumulations are expected to be less than one inch, which is just enough to make your driveway look like it needs a good vacuuming. Higher elevations in the northwestern corner might see one to two inches, which is basically a snow party for those lucky enough to live there.

Commute Caution:

Thursday morning could turn into a slippery adventure, especially if you’re in North Jersey. The forecast includes potential snow squalls, which are like surprise snow parties that can pop up and ruin your day. These squalls can reduce visibility faster than you can say “Where did my car go?” and create rapid, thin snow coatings that might make your commute feel like a scene from a winter-themed horror movie. AccuWeather is warning about rapid freeze-ups, where the roads get wet from the snow squalls and then decide to freeze before they dry—talk about a plot twist! But don’t worry too much; south of I-78, temperatures are likely to remain above freezing, so it’s not all doom and gloom. Just think of it as a chance to practice your ice-skating skills… on the road!

A Christmas Dream Unimagined

(The classic tale of a classic song)

Imagine dreaming you had one chance to write a song that all the world would sing, and your dream came true. Now imagine experiencing a life challenging illness that your share of the sales of that song, barely support your mounting medical expenses. Such is the case of Nadine Scott McKinnor. The year was 1970. The songwriter, Nadine, the recording artist, Donny Hathaway. The song? “This Christmas.” To date, over 300 artists have recorded this song. Unfortunately because of industry practices and standards in the early 70’s, Ms. McKinnor failed to protect her interests and did not benefit financially to the extent we would imagine today. (Picture Source: Wix Media)

History is littered with countless untold stories about the accomplishments of hidden black female figures. For over 50 years, we’ve been inspired by this heartfelt Christmas classic. Now due to a sudden debilitating stroke, in September, Nadine is in need of financial support to assist with mounting medical bills not covered by her insurance.

Please show your love to this inspirational woman and writer of our beloved classic….” And this Christmas will be a very special Christmas for me”, …..you and Nadine. We love Donny Hathaway for recording this song and making it the mega-hit it is today. It was definitely a match made in Heaven. Please contribute as your heart leads you. All donations are welcomed.

PS Nadine is one of my favorite people on the planet,… so humble and resisted me doing this in the beginning. I love her dearly and she knows it. Kindly think of her every time you hear “This Christmas”. We want her well, telling her jokes and making us smile.

Thank you on behalf of her friends and her sons, Steve and Michael,

Windy Barnes & Team Nadine

Tragic Accident Claims Cyclist's Life in West Long Branch

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ — Per a report shared by Carly Baldwin of the Middletown Patch titled "Tinton Falls Teen Hits, Kills Cyclist In Accidental Crash: Prosecutor," Dec 3, 2024 A tragic incident occurred on Saturday night when an 18-year-old man from Tinton Falls, driving a 2018 Range Rover, struck and killed a cyclist.
